The Multiverse Theory As It Pertains to Otherkin and Fictionkin
This writing has been modified from its original format so that it could stand as its own post. You can find the original here.
The multiverse theory is a scientific theory that states that there are other universes or planes of existence outside of what we can perceive in our universe.
One iteration of the multiverse theory states that there an infinite number of alternate universes, each with its own set of timelines, laws of physics (and biology, by that stretch), and energy.
Infinity is a really big number. It’s so big, in fact, that it’s not even considered a cardinal number (a number you can count). No matter how high you count, you can always count one more. (Vsauce actually did a video on infinity, which you can view here.)
By that same stretch, if each of those infinite universes is different, then there must be universes where dragons and other fantastic creatures exist, or where the plot, characters, and world of every single work of fiction, past, present, and future, must have happened, is happening, or will happen. And there will be an infinite number of universes almost exactly like it, with differences ranging from minuscule and unnoticeable to large (this is where you get the AU characters). Similar to how pi’s digits contain every phone number in existence, and, if the numerals were translated to letters, every book ever written, every song, every sentence ever spoken, any combination that has existed, does exist, and will exist in the future.
So, these characters, according to the multiverse theory in that iteration, are real. So are things like dragons, unicorns, and other mythological creatures. It also contains things we don’t know about, or never will know about.
A very smart man explained this to me once, as a child, which kept me interested to this day, doing a lot of reading and loving every second of it. It’s really a beautiful theory. In fact, as we speak, scientists (real, actual scientists) are looking for evidence that this theory may be true. Some say they may have found some. Others say we must keep looking.
Souls are complicated things, and we honestly can’t be sure they even exist, let alone know how they work and move. Most otherkin and fictionkin believe they can travel very long distances- between universes, even. That’s the root of the belief right there.
(Let me know if I missed something, or if you have questions that I might be able to answer. If you have something to add, please reblog and keep the discussion going! I love to hear what y'all have to say about this stuff.)
